May 15: Saint Isidore / San Isidro

Saint Isidore is the patron saint of farmers and the United States National Rural Life Conference. He himself was a Spanish farmer. His deep faith and inspiring humility were the hallmarks of his simple life as a hired worker. He was known as a family man, a man of hard work, and a man of God. When the National Rural Life Conference was established, there was no better saint to look to as a patron than St. Isidore.

Let us pray. “Grant, O God, that through the intercession of Saint Isidore, the farmer, we may follow his example of patience and humility, and so walk faithfully in his footsteps so that, in the evening of life, we may be able to present to you an abundant harvest of good fruits, through Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.”

Hoy celebramos a San Isidro Labrador, patrono de los agricultores. Conocido como hombre de familia, hombre de trabajo duro, y hombre de Dios, él empezaba su jornada asistiendo a Misa muy temprano. Sin embargo, a veces, se retrasaba un poco para llegar al campo a trabajar. Sin querer, despertó así la cólera de varios de sus compañeros, quienes lo acusaron de holgazán ante el patrón. El dueño de las tierras verificó que la acusación era cierta – el santo sí solía llegar un poco tarde a sus labores – pero quedó impactado al ver que, mientras Isidro no llegaba, los bueyes con los que trabajaba movían el arado como si alguien los estuviera guiando. Así, nació el rumor de que mientras Isidro estaba en Misa, un ángel cubría su puesto en el campo.
